Welcome to the New South Wales Branch of the Health Information Management Association of Australia.

HIMAA NSW Branch Committee Meeting – Tuesday 20 February 2018,  5.30pm @  North Ryde RSL (cnr Pittwater and Magdala Rds, North Ryde)

We hope that you will benefit from the content of our state’s website.

We currently live in exciting times as Health Information Managers.  NSW Health’s Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Strategic Plan of 2008 includes the following key programs of work, which are ever-increasingly new and emerging work roles for HIMs:

  • Electronic Health Record pilots
  • Electronic Medical Record implementation – statewide rollouts of Emergency Department modules, Operating Theatre Modules, Results Reporting, Order Management, Scheduling  and Discharge Referral
  • Outpatient and Community Health Systems
  • Patient Administration Systems
  • State Unique Patient Identifier Systems
  • Picture Archival Communication Systems / Radiology Information Systems (PACS/RIS)
  • Business Information Strategy (includes metadata and clinical terminologies)

Although the benefits of the ICT Strategic plan are currently being rolled out across public hospitals, there is an enormous challenge for Private Hospitals and Day Procedure Centres to create alliances and partnerships with the public sector to ensure that electronic sharing of information can be a reality for each setting of the patient’s journey throughout the health system.

Whilst looking ahead to the future, the NSW Branch also recognises that there are many HIMs in NSW working in traditional hospital-based roles both in the public and private sector.  Major issues such as clinical coding, coder workforce shortages, staff management and Episode-Based Funding are fundamental in these work roles.

The NSW Branch aims to support and educate all our NSW Health Information Managers.  We invite your input and suggestions for improvement.
